Questions about medicine in Europe
Can I study medicine in English in Europe?
Yes. Public medical faculties in Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Hungary teach general medicine, dentistry and pharmacy fully in English for international students. The table on this page lists the ones PAL works with.
How long does medicine take?
General medicine is a 6-year programme that leads straight to the doctor's degree, with no separate pre-medical bachelor's. Dentistry takes 5 to 6 years and pharmacy 5 years, depending on the university.
Is there an entrance exam?
Most of these universities set their own entrance test, usually in biology and chemistry, or hold an interview. A PAL counsellor tells you what each university asks for and when.
Will my degree be recognised?
These are EU degrees that follow EU training rules for doctors. If you want to work in another country, such as Pakistan, check that country's own rules with its medical council (in Pakistan, the PMDC) before you choose.
Do I need to learn the local language?
Teaching is in English, but universities also teach Slovak, Czech or Hungarian because you speak with patients in the clinical years.
How much does it cost?
Tuition for English-taught medicine ranges from about €10,000 to €20,000 a year, depending on the university, plus living costs. See each university's fees in the table and use the cost calculator.
PAL also helps with medical and health degrees in India, Malaysia, Russia, Turkey. Ask a counsellor, or browse the medical degrees in the course finder.
