Before you go, and your first weeks
You have your visa. Here is what to sort out before you fly and after you land. Your PAL counsellor stays with you through all of it.
Before you fly
- Pay any tuition or deposit the way your university asks, and keep the receipt.
- Book a dormitory place or a room. Many universities have dormitories for international students; apply early because places go fast.
- Buy health insurance if your country or university needs it from day one.
- Book your flight and send the details to your counsellor.
- Carry your passport, visa, offer letter, insurance and proof of money in your hand luggage, and keep copies on your phone.
- Bring some cash in euros or the local currency, and a bank card that works abroad.
Airport pickup
Arriving in Slovakia? PAL can arrange for a driver from PAL Fleet to meet you at the airport and take you to your accommodation. Ask your counsellor for the price and availability at least a week before you travel. In other countries, your counsellor tells you the easiest way to get from the airport to your city.
Your first two weeks
- Register at your university and collect your student card.
- Register your address with the local authorities within the deadline your country sets. Your counsellor tells you the exact steps for your country and city.
- Collect or apply for your residence permit card if your visa needs one.
- Get a local SIM card, so the university and PAL can reach you.
- Open a local bank account if you will stay more than a few months.
- Check the rules on working while you study before you take a job. In Slovakia, for example, students with a study residence permit may work up to 80 hours a month.
We are still here
PAL stays in touch after you arrive. If something goes wrong with your accommodation, documents or studies, message your counsellor or write to us on WhatsApp.
